HOUSTON – School is just around the corner. In preparation for the school year, districts and organizations have started announcing vaccine clinics. Many will be hosting clinics for the standard required immunizations and others will also be including COVID-19 vaccines in their list of vaccines available at the clinic.
Here is what you need to know:
Alief ISD event
Memorial Hermann is partnering with Alief ISD for two free vaccine clinics. The clinics will be held on Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday’s clinic will be Killough Middle School and Saturday’s will be at the Alief Center for Talent Development. According to Memorial Hermann, they are offering both first and second doses of the Pfizer vaccine at these events. Individuals 12 and older are eligible to receive free vaccinations. Officials in Houston say massive power outages across Texas because of a winter storm knocked out electricity to a facility storing over 8,000 doses of Modernaâs coronavirus vaccine.
The outages forced Houston health officials Monday to scramble to distribute the doses before they went bad. More than 2 million people across Texas are without power after a massive storm system dropped temperatures into single digits as far south as San Antonio.
The Moderna vaccines in Houston were distributed to hospitals, a county jail and Rice University. Sophomore Harry Golen says he and some friends waited nearly four hours, much of it outdoors in the frigid cold, outside a campus gymnasium to get the shots. ....

Thirty-eight Democratic members of the Texas House of Representatives signed a Jan. 6 letter urging Gov. Greg Abbott and Dr. John Hellerstedt, the Texas Department of State Health Services commissioner, to improve the COVID-19 vaccination rollout process.
The letter written by Rep. Vikki Goodwin, D-Austin, addressed her constituents confusion surrounding the state’s vaccine distribution. Goodwin said in a Jan. 6 tweet she has received calls from people frustrated and confused by the process.

For now, doctors are more concerned that vaccinations against other illnesses are lagging this year.
For now, the answer is no. Receiving the coronavirus shot is a voluntary process,
and neither of the authorized vaccines is approved for use in young children.
It could be months or longer before there’s a vaccine available for kids, and it’s unclear whether even that would lead to a push for a mandate in Texas.
“Until we have data that shows good efficacy and safety in children, then conversations about whether it will be suggested or mandated for school attendance is something that’s about 75 steps down the road,” said Dr. Jason Terk, a pediatrician in Keller and chair of the Texas Public Health Coalition. ....
