This pioneering documentary by the Oscar-winning director began by telling the story of the young people who were at the party through the voices of those who survived the blaze. It also chronicled the events that led up to it, the rising tension between Black communities, police, fascist party the National Front and Margaret Thatcher s Tory government. Whether familiar or not with the historical events, viewers found tonight s watch to be both powerful and harrowing. A lot of viewers also praised McQueen s work and his wonderful storytelling. I, LIKE many other Scottish families, have devastatingly experienced the death of a loved one from terminal illness. My father was diagnosed with short-term terminal cancer. He was very pragmatic and faced his illness with huge bravery. His fear was not death itself, but how he would die. To put it bluntly, my father’s cancer experience over four months was devastating. He required medication to manage the extreme pain from his cancer, but this medication caused him terrifying hallucinations. With no other options, my dad had to continue with this treatment, and we watched our kind, sensitive, loving father become someone we no longer recognised and who no longer recognised us. ....

Ahead of its release Coatbridge-born Millar, the writer-creator behind Kick-Ass, Kingsman and Wanted, gave The Herald Magazine a wide-ranging interview which touched on everything from his childhood to his ambitions to compete with Disney. Netflix has just announced that work on a TV adaptation of The Magic Order is restarting while two new volumes of the comic, with art by Stuart Immonen and Gigi Cavenago respectively. An anime version of Super Crooks will launch on Netflix later this year. ....
THE manifesto pledges from the SNP detailed by the First Minister ( Sturgeon pledges stability with freeze on income tax , The Herald, April 15) once again demonstrate economic illiteracy at the highest level. The shameless “spend, spend, spend” pledges do not bear any level-headed scrutiny, as so stated by the independent Institute of Fiscal Studies. Transformational” spending as she describes but then in almost the same breath, a freeze on income tax rates, simply do not equate, and when the deficit figures appear, this will be fantasy economics. Nicola Sturgeon was Cabinet Secretary for Health & Wellbeing from 2007–2012 and has been First Minster since 2014. Her “transformational” spending promise equates to just £178 million for each year she has been in power and of course begs the question why it has taken her 14 years to even consider this? Free dental care will only potentially benefit those that can actually afford it as those who are unable to do so ....
