Nearly 1 in 5 Tennessee students in 6 districts were chronically absent this year due to the pandemic, report finds

More students were absent from school desks or in front of computer screens thanks to pandemic-related disruptions this school year, a new report finds.
Though many predicted chronic absenteeism would increase with schools opening and closing and students learning remotely, as the school year comes to a close there’s now data that shows this.
In a study across six Tennessee districts serving about 150,000 students, researchers from the Tennessee Education Research Alliance, led by Vanderbilt University s Peabody College, found that 1 in 5 students in these six districts were chronically absent during the fall 2020 semester. ....

Unity Group Opposes Achievement School District 2.0

Unity Group Opposes Achievement School District 2.0

A new proposal being pushed through the Tennessee House Education Committee is the latest saga in the long effort to takeover schools through privatization. In order to accomplish this, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the state would create the Achievement School District 2.0. The ASD has been the embattled mostly charter run district, which operates a majority of its schools in Memphis and Nashville; has been plagued by multiple executive directors; constant teacher turnover; funding irregularities; school closures; dwindling student enrollment numbers; and has failed to demonstrate substantial student academic progress as compared to their traditional counterparts. Despite a 2020 announcement that ASD schools could potentially return to their local districts, what has since developed is a replication of prior practices which are aimed at the ultimate takeover of public schools ....

Tennessee lawmakers are threatening to defund schools that refuse to return to in-person learning. The pressure campaign is aimed squarely at Memphis and Nashville, which serve mostly Black and Latino students and have been online-only since spring 2020.
The squeeze on these two school districts comes as teachers in Chicago rebuffed directives from the mayor and board of education to reopen their doors on Monday. “We will continue to work remote so we can keep ourselves, our families and our school communities safe. If we are locked out by the mayor and CPS [Chicago Public Schools], then the choice to strike is theirs, not ours,” the Chicago Teachers ....
