Pentagon says it will return border wall money, reviving hope for Fort Campbell middle school


CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – An end to plans for a border wall could mean the return of funding for a middle school at Fort Campbell.
Late Friday, the Department of Defense released a statement on the cancellation of border wall projects that were going to be paid for with funds originally intended for the military, specifically mentioning “schools for military children.”
“Consistent with the president’s proclamation, the Department of Defense is proceeding with canceling all border barrier construction projects paid for with funds originally intended for other military missions and functions such as schools for military children, overseas military construction projects in partner nations, and the National Guard and Reserve equipment account,” said Jamal Brown, deputy Pentagon spokesman. ....

The State Funeral for World War II Veterans organization announced that World War II Technical Sergeant, Charles H. Coolidge, U.S. Army from Tennessee will receive this year’s national George Marshall Award. The honor recognizes a prominent American who best celebrates the sacrifice, resilience, and service of the 16 million women and men who served in the Armed Forces during World War II.
Five Star U.S. Army General George Marshall led the American military during World War II. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill called him “the organizer of the Allied Victory in the Second World War.” He was Army Chief of Staff from 1939 till 1945. General Marshall later served as Secretary of State under President Truman where he crafted the Marshall Plan for the economic recovery of Europe. ....

BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. The Blount County Commission pulled a proposal off its agenda Thursday that would reduce the number of voting locations from 31 to around 15 in the county, with 19 voting to pull it and one commissioner abstaining.
It was a fiery meeting as commissioners discussed whether they had the authority to vote on such a measure. Several commissioners said they supported pulling the resolution off the agenda and they wanted to give people living in Blount County a chance to have their voices heard on the proposal. ....

The fascination with royal families is hardly new.  I well remember just how many people were caught up in the wedding of Prince Charles to Diana Spencer.  Like every capital of a civilized country, Washington, D.C. has a vibrant social life and the visit of King George VI and his queen, Elizabeth, to the United States captivated much of the country.    Those folks who have watched The Crown on Netflix realize their daughter is Queen Elizabeth II.
The invitation to visit America had come from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and it was heralded throughout the media of the day for no reigning British monarch had ever trod on American soil.  The United States and Great Britain had something of a checkered history since the Colonies broke away from the British Empire.  The Capitol still carries scars from the War of 1812 when President James Madison and First Lady Dolly Madison had to flee before British troops burned down the White House.  Relations be ....
