Dr. David Shoham appointed chair of ETSU Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology


East Tennessee State University’s College of Public Health announced the appointment of Dr. David Shoham as chairman of the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology. He begins his new role July 1.
Shoham comes to ETSU from Loyola University Chicago, where he has served since 2007. In addition to his role on faculty as associate professor, he has held several administrative roles at Loyola, most recently serving as director of the Institute of Public Health, Public Health programs, and the Master of Public Health program.
Trained in cardiovascular and renal epidemiology with a focus on social determinants of health and disease, his current research focuses on social network analysis and the social context of bladder health. ....

ETSU students put Johnson City on the map in CDC mask wearing study


ETSU graduate students conducted observations for CDC on mask wearing on, off campus
A team of graduate students from East Tennessee State University’s College of Public Health have been busy placing Johnson City on the map as they conclude four months of local observations for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s national MASCUP! study.
Under the direction of Dr. Sam Pettyjohn, research assistant professor, ETSU is one of 66 locations nationwide chosen to assess mask wearing behaviors at U.S. colleges and universities as part of a larger “Mask Adherence Surveillance at Colleges and Universities,” or MASCUP! Students have collected field data gathered on and off campus. ....

ETSU College of Public Health COVID-19 vaccine webinar on Tuesday


East Tennessee State University’s College of Public Health will host its second “Coronavirus: Separating Fact From Fiction” webinar on Tuesday, this time focusing on questions about the COVID-19 vaccines.
“I think it’s really important (to have events like this),” Dr. Randy Wykoff, the college’s dean, said. “There’s so many sources of information out there and it’s completely understandable when folks don’t quite know what reality is when they’re hearing completely different stories from different places.
“Our goal here is to put folks who know what they’re talking about to present a little bit of information but, more importantly, answer questions people really have,” he continued. “Hopefully, for the folks who are interested in learning more, this will be a good opportunity for them.” ....
