Man charged in drunken driving crash that left 2 motorcyclists in a coma Updated Apr 29, 2021; Facebook Share SAGINAW, MI A Birch Run man has been charged with two felonies 10 months after he allegedly caused a drunken-driving crash that put two people in comas. Just after midnight on July 18, Cole J. Severn was driving a 2005 Grand Prix on Bell Road near East Sloan Road in Taymouth Township when he tried making a turn, prosecutors said. Severn ended up crashing into a motorcycle with a male driver and female passenger, both 25. The woman suffered serious head injuries and was in a coma for an extended period of time, prosecutors said. They could not share her current status. ....

The same complication is also keeping police from learning the identity of a set of human bones found in the county years ago. Sheriff William L. Federspiel said an unexpected cut in federal grant funding to a laboratory is what’s causing the two mysteries to remain unsolved. On Feb. 26, two teenagers who were fishing along the Flint River in the area of Seymour and East Sloan roads in Taymouth Township found the human foot. Federspiel described it as being in a lace-up work boot, size 10 ½. The sex, race, and approximate age of the foot’s person remain unknown. ....

The foot was found Feb. 26 along the banks of the Flint River in Taymouth Township, The Saginaw News reported Thursday. It has been sent to the state police Crime Lab where DNA from the foot will be compared to other collected DNA, Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel said. The foot was in a size 10½, lace-up work boot and could have been in the water anywhere from six months to two years, he added. Taymouth Township is south of Saginaw and about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Detroit. The Flint River extends about 78 miles (125 kilometers) through several Michigan counties, according to the newspaper. ....
