On March 26, San Antonio investor and Republican contributor Paul Vance gave $12,360 to a political action committee named Friends of SAFA Texas, or the San Antonio Family Association.
On April 19, the political action committee spent $12,000 on advertising with an Austin firm to help Patrick Von Dohlen’s campaign against San Antonio City Council member John Courage, according to filings with the Texas Ethics Commission.
The Family Association opposes the appointment of gays and lesbians to government positions, champions the anti-abortion movement and makes clear its choices on candidates and ballot issues. Von Dohlen is its president and Vance is a longtime friend and supporter of his candidacy. ....

Sir Derek Roberts, who has died aged 88, was an industrial scientist who served two terms as Provost of University College London, from 1989 to 99 and 2002 to 03, but discovered during his second term that business and academe make uncomfortable bedfellows.
UCL broke with tradition in appointing an industrialist (Roberts was joint deputy managing director of Arnold Weinstock’s GEC), to the Provostship. The philosopher Jeremy Bentham had been a previous holder of the office, his mummified body on display in a college corridor reminding passers-by of the college’s proud traditions. ....
