Tidal Energy Articles, Stories & News

Martin Hannan for The National:  HOUSEHOLDERS on the Shetland Isles were not aware of it, but when they plugged in their kettles recently, they were sharing in a bit of history.
For the Shetland Tidal Array at Bluemull Sound, installed by Nova Innovation of Edinburgh, has become the world’s first tidal power array to be connected to a grid and deliver power on a commercial basis – to dozens of homes on the islands.
The achievement has been hailed by environmentalists and the renewable industry as a turning point in the development of marine power.
Nova had shown its technology could work with a single turbine which generated electricity in March. But the installation of second turbine that is also working to the grid proves that large tidal power arrays can and do work. Commercially viable tidal power is seen as something of a Holy Grail by the industry, since it is one of the few renewable energy sources that is entirely predictable – as one indust ....

Lou Ottens obituary

Last modified on Thu 18 Mar 2021 15.30 EDT
Lou Ottens, who has died aged 94, invented the audio tape cassette, and thus was instrumental in making music both more portable and more personal for millions of people around the world. The transistor radio had allowed listeners to carry their preferred radio stations around with them, but the advent of the audio cassette provided them with an easy means of recording radio broadcasts or dubbing from LP records into an easily portable format.
Ottens had already developed portable tape recorders for his employers, the Dutch electronics company Philips, but he pursued a simpler format, as he put it, “simply out of irritation” with the awkwardness of handling reel-to-reel tape. He never foresaw the changes his 1962 invention would bring. “We expected it to be a success, not a revolution,” he said. ....

Other researchers in the field flagged doubts over errors in the data, while Nature tacked an ‘editorial expression of concern’ to the paper.
A Microsoft researcher has revised a paper on quantum computing due to “technical errors”, in a blow to the company’s quantum efforts.
In 2018, Leo Kouwenhoven, a physicist working for Microsoft, published a paper claiming that he and his co-authors had observed a particle called a Majorana fermion, which could be used to develop a quantum computer.
However, Wired reports that the authors have now published a new paper correcting errors in the 2018 paper that was published in Nature. The authors added that a retraction note is being prepared for Nature, which will include a “detailed description of errors and the corrected data analyses”. ....
