Nordic noir, self-development, pop-science: whatever the genre, Russian readers can’t get enough of it, even (or especially) in translation.
Over the past decade, the good old classics George Orwell’s
1984 and Ray Bradbury’s
Fahrenheit 451 and
Dandelion Wine  have led book sales in Russia. Russian readers also adore J.K. Rowling and are still handcuffed to the erotic trilogy
50 Shades of Gray by E.L. James. But there are other modern authors whose latest translated offerings always get snapped up.
1. Stephen King
In 2020, King s  ....

18 of Our Favorite Books on Writing

Of all the books on this list, Jeff VanderMeer’s
Wonderbook is the most expansive. The exercises in the book are all about short circuiting your usual patterns of thought, and opening you up to the idea that, really, a story can be anything, and it can go anywhere. Rather than simply relying on chunks of text and straight-ahead writing advice, VanderMeer uses illustrations, asides, sidebars, and a whole interactive site to create a conversation with his reader. He also includes a number of essays from other writers often writers who directly disagree with advice he’s just given to create a polyphonous craft book. This serves a purpose that I think is rare in even the most well-meaning piece of writing advice: it reminds you that writing, and all art, (and, hell, ....

The Other Columbus: In praise of awesome teachers and soap

Alive’s columnist offers up some deserved kudos for Teacher Appreciation Week
Scott Woods
It is Teacher Appreciation Week and I have to say this out loud, in public, for the record: For a guy whose mutant superpower is academic failure, whatever good resides in me as an adult is due in part to awesome teachers.
My first awesome teacher was Ms. Clingo, who literally scared me off of cursing in third grade by dragging me into the bathroom and pressing soap against my lips. I get how that sounds like a horror story, but this was a time when school administrators were beating children with boards for talking in class. An attempted mouth rinsing didn’t seem out of order then, though she would have surely been fired if anyone knew that extracurricular lesson had occurred. At the time, I was new to cursing and she was new to teaching, so I’d like to think that we both learned something that day. It was an old school pun ....

We watched the entire Longmire series last year and this is a Longmire book. I always wondered why most Longmire episodes on TV took place in the summer in Wyoming. In this story, Walt deals with a harsh Wyoming blizzard as he unravels an interesting mystery.

by Don Winslow
I discovered Winslow on the New Books shelf at the library. Liked it so much, I read three of his books in rapid succession. Could be that the stories all take place in Southern California, near where I grew up. This is a book of six short novellas. ....
