Portland woman running for seat on David Douglas school board received hateful note

Hoa Nguyen received the note just a few days after the shootings in Atlanta.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Hoa Nguyen is running for a seat on the David Douglas School Board. The 37-year-old will tell you she has the thick skin necessary for the job. The second-generation Vietnamese American will also tell you no amount of thick skin could shield her from what happened last month.
"It is happening," Nguyen said. "It is real and it's impacting the people around us."
Just a few days after the shooting deaths of the Asian Americans in Atlanta, Nguyen says there was a knock at the front door of her East Portland home. Nguyen opened the door to find a note with the phrase 'Kung Flu' on it.

Hoa Nguyen, a Portland Public Schools employee and a candidate for David Douglas School Board, said she received a racist note at her Southeast Portland home earlier in March.

Hoa Nguyen was startled awake earlier this month at 6 a.m. by her dog growling followed by an unexpected knock on her Southeast Portland door.
The 37-year-old said that when she answered the door, she discovered a racist two-word note targeting Asians, written in Sharpie, sitting on her doorstep.
Nguyen, who is Vietnamese American, said she first tried to plow through her workday March 19 – juggling her duties as a Portland Public Schools staffer focused on curbing chronic absenteeism while also working on her campaign as a candidate for the David Douglas School board. Four board seats are up for election May 18.

SALEM -- The Salem-Keizer School District will no longer contract with local police departments to station officers at district schools, Superintendent Christy Perry told the school board at a meeting Tuesday night.
The decision comes 10 months after activists and community members, led by youth group Latinos Unidos Siempre, began pushing the district to end its contracts, which stationed 11 police officers at middle and high schools across the district at the cost of about $1 million per year. They said the presence of officers made students of color feel unsafe and contributed to a system where Black and Latino students were funneled into the criminal justice system.

Murmurs: Turmoil Over Cops at Transition Projects In other news: Rumblings in the next governor's race.

TURMOIL OVER COPS AT TRANSITION PROJECTS: Since last summer, dozens of employees at Transition Projects Inc., the Portland nonprofit that runs 10 local homeless shelters with a budget of about $20 million, have pushed to expel two board members: Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese and Portland Police Bureau Assistant Chief Jami Resch. The employees' objections were not personal but rather a reflection of the negative interactions many homeless people and TPI staff have had with police. TPI executive director George Devendorf says the board took the requests very seriously, brought in an outside consultant, and held a series of meetings with employees, but ultimately decided it "makes more sense to engage with law enforcement than to turn our backs." The issue is far from over, but Reese, who sat on the board for 13 years, left at the end of December when his term expired. Resch will remain. A recent letter to the board signed by 110 of TPI's 375 employees says the struggle to oust law enforcement and make other social justice gains will continue. "We are at a pivotal point in history," they wrote, "where we must make a choice between remaining complacent in an oppressive institution, or rising up with the Black community in demanding justice."

Is your Oregon school district moving to in-person learning?

Portland Public Schools:
In the latest update from the school board, it said that it has expanded in-person learning opportunities but has not yet started hybrid learning for all K-5 students as it had intended.
In January, PPS chief of schools Dr. Shawn Bird spoke on the moves PPS was making to try and make hybrid learning possible. It hopes to begin the transition in April.
“School administrators have been identifying the students that are eligible, and they’re reaching out to families individually, making sure that families understand this is optional and we want to make sure they feel safe,” he said.

Pamplin Media Group - Community members renew calls for Mark Shull's resignation

Community members renew calls for Mark Shull's resignation
January 21 2021
Path for healing exists, but not if commissioner remains a represenative of Clackamas County, say Muslim and LGBTQ residents
A coalition of community members representing metro-area Muslim residents and other marginalized groups held a press conference Thursday afternoon to renew calls for Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull to resign.
Shull — who recently came under scrutiny for racist, transphobic, anti-immigrant and Islamophobic statements made on his personal Facebook page — has doubled down on some of his comments in recent days. During a Board of County Commissioners meeting Thursday, Jan. 21, Shull incorrectly stated that Muslim people believe in Sharia Law over the U.S. Constitution. His comments followed nearly 45 minutes of public testimony in which community members unleashed scathing calls for his resignation.
