HE PLACE that is now known as George Floyd Square is these days blocked to cars, creating an effective memorial. Walk in from the Powderhorn Park end and you see posters giving advice about proper behaviour, rather like those signs outside a church advising that shorts and flash-photography are forbidden. A few doors down from the Cup Foods grocery store, the last place that Mr Floyd entered before he was murdered, an arts centre has been converted into a museum for all the protest signs that were waved on the street outside. Within the arts centre there is discussion of the importance of protest gardening. In a park nearby stand around 150 white plastic headstones, each of them marked with the name of an African-American killed by the police, their dates, a fist that was the emblem of the Black Panther party and the words “Rest in Power”. The combination of hippydom with symbols that are drawn from black radicalism gives the place something of the feel of the 1960s. ....

Two Discovery Square Building Scheduled For "Topping Off"


Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Today marks a milestone day for the construction of the Two Discovery Square Building in downtown Rochester.
Construction crews and community leaders are celebrating the ceremonial steel “topping off” of Two Discovery Square, its second building in the Destination Medical Center Discovery Square sub-district. The steel topping off is a major milestone celebrated when the highest or last steel beam is placed in a building under construction. A beam signing and placement of the beam in Two Discovery Square are planned for today.
According to a press release, the building is designed to help foster life science research and innovation. The project is scheduled to open in mid-2022. ....

Provo City Council reallocates CARES act funds in split vote

The Provo City Council met virtually on Feb. 16 to discuss the reallocation of over $7 million from the city’s general fund into various capital improvement funds to make the money available for local projects including a fire station, grocery store, park and airport terminal. 
This influx of $7,879,285 came from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act which “provides for payments to state, local and tribal governments navigating the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak,” according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. This act has allowed state and local governments to continue in their work despite the economic impacts of COVID-19. ....
