SIR – Historians looking back will think the British Government mad if it accedes to SNP demands for another independence referendum.
With a 63 per cent turnout and 47.7 per cent of the vote, only 30 per cent of the Scottish electorate and 2.7 per cent of the British electorate actually supported this demand.
The idea that, so soon after gaining its own independence, Britain should hand back a strategically important part of our country to the now somewhat hostile Franco-German hegemony we have only just escaped is preposterous. Britain is still part of the friendly worldwide Commonwealth of nations that the Scots and English created. Now that we are free of the EU, that is where our future lies. ....

Standing in a crowded hallway outside a committee room in the Kentucky State Capitol, House Speaker Greg Stumbo is surrounded by thankful teachers and skeptical reporters. It is mid-February and the committee has just approved his proposal to borrow $3.3 billion to shore up the state’s teacher retirement system. Stumbo has argued that current, historically low interest rates are a window of opportunity to solidify funding for the troubled system. But, notes one reporter, borrowing $3.3 billion would be a challenge since it would be the largest bond offering in Kentucky’s history.  ....

Next month, UoN students will have the chance to head to the polls once again, this time to elect Nottinghamshire’s new Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC).
The job of the Commissioner is to oversee all policing across Nottinghamshire, providing a voice to the people by ensuring there is police accountability. 
Three candidates are running for the role, with the Conservatives, Labour and the Liberal Democrats each vying for the position. 
Impact’s News Editor Lauren McGaun caught up with Labour’s Paddy Tipping and the Liberal Democrat’s David Watts to find out more about why they were running for the role. ....

Joel Black, CPA, replaced David Vaudt, CPA, as chairman of GASB at the beginning of July, shortly after the coronavirus pandemic plunged state and local governments into a chasm of concerns about financial shortages mounting as citizens’ need for services increased.
A former partner in charge of the audit practice at Mauldin & Jenkins LLC in Atlanta, Black has a deep understanding of the difficulties governments are facing in their operations and financial reporting.
