Pair want Klukay on Walk of Fame

Article content
John Manzo and Gary Trembinski are teaming up, again, to get one of the Top 100 Toronto Maple Leafs of all time inducted into Sault Ste. Marie Walk of Fame.
Joe Klukay grew up in Bayview. He played more than 560 games with the Leafs and Boston Bruins during a 10-year career that started in 1946. The Bayview Flash won four Stanley Cups, a record he shares with Marty Pavelich for most NHL championships won by someone from the Sault. Klukay won Lord Stanley’s mug with the Leafs in 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951. Klukay was 41 when he celebrated an Allan Cup championship with the Windsor Bulldogs .

Ken Dryden calls it "a rivalry of cities, a rivalry of cultures."
The Hockey Hall of Fame goalie has seen the duel between the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs from each side, a legend in goal with the Canadiens during their glorious 1970s, a president of his hometown Maple Leafs from 1997-2003.
"All of a sudden now, Toronto and Montreal are playing a whole pile of games against each other," Dryden said. "There's a pretty good chance they're going to end up playing each other in a playoff.

'Hungry' Auston Matthews passionate about improving his shot

TSN Toronto Reporter Mark Masters reports on the Maple Leafs, who practised at the Ford Performance Centre on Friday ahead of Saturday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks.
Jason Spezza and Auston Matthews led the Leafs to a convincing 7-3 win on Thursday night and came within a whisker of ending a 56-year drought. Spezza scored three goals while Matthews potted a pair against the Vancouver Canucks. The last time two Leafs recorded a hat trick in the same game? Dave Keon and Bob Pulford did it against the New York Rangers in 1965.
Matthews and Spezza were both back on the ice before practice on Friday working on their craft. Matthews was fine-tuning his shot.

NHL great Reggie Leach looks back fondly on memories of late George Armstrong

Armstrong passed away from heart complications this past Sunday at the age of 90. Born to an Ojibway mother and an Irish-Canadian father in Skead, Ont. in 1930, Armstrong was the first Indigenous NHL player to score in the NHL.
Leach, originally from Berens River First Nation near Riverton, Man., carried the torch as one of the NHL’s most notable Indigenous players for his 13 NHL seasons. Drafted 3rd overall by Boston after a very successful career with the Flin Flon Bombers, Leach currently holds the record for the most career NHL goals scored from a player born in Manitoba.
“I was always aware of who George was," Leach said on his early days. "He was one of our First Nations heroes.”
