Darkest Dungeon 2 interview - Learning & evolving the gameplay formula


Darkest Dungeon 2 is the follow-up to Darkest Dungeon and is set to launch this year. Developed by Red Hook Studios Darkest Dungeon 2 looks to deliver more of the strategic RPG action that fans loved about the first one. Ahead of its launch this year, we spoke with the co-founders of Red Hook Studios to learn more about the gameplay in Darkest Dungeon 2.
Shacknews Head of Video sat down with Red Hook Studios co-founders Chris Bourassa and Tyler Sigman to discuss the development of Darkest Dungeon 2. Specifically, the trio talked about the gameplay, and how it evolved over time. The recent announcement over the failure of
Balan Wonderworld and the possible retirement of Yuji Naka has made me think more about the structure of gameplay and game design. I haven’t played the game yet, but watching footage and hearing impressions about it, and I could not imagine that game being a success in today’s market, which raises a big question: Why was it designed that way? Yuji Naka joins a surprisingly long list of developers who were in the AAA or AA space that could not bounce back with new games following the ones that made them a success. I don’t think for a second that Yuji Naka doesn’t understand videogames but comprehending the fundamentals of game design goes beyond just making videogames, even award-winning ones, and why it is becoming increasingly important to understand them.

Over the last few years, early access games have evolved. Games are launching into early access more polished than ever before, and the line between unfinished early access games and "live service" games is increasingly blurred.
To find out more about how things have changed since Steam Early Access first started in 2013, I spoke to the developers of Darkest Dungeon, Baldur's Gate 3, Hades, Grounded and GTFO. They told me about the concerns and difficulties of launching a game after the first early access trailblazers, what they've learned about making games in public, and why they'd be happy to do it all again.
