The return of the annual race series is one of the first local sports events to come back.
Following an unprecedented one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Portland s Friends of PIR have announced that the city s signature auto racing event will return this summer to celebrate 60 years of competition.
The organization said the 2021 Rose Cup Races will take place July 9 to 11 at Portland International Raceway. According to the announcement, auto enthusiasts and their friends and family will enjoy seven different race groups including a return of Go-Karts as well as special salutes to the cars, drivers and stories compiled since 1961. ....

Troutdale s Caiden Madzelan, 15, will be among teenagers competing for spot in national finals.
He s 15 and a Reynolds High School sophomore, but Caiden Madzelan doesn t fear competing against grown men.
He welcomes it. He s ninja like that.
Madzelan, an accomplished obstacle athlete and junior competitor, will move up to the adult division for the upcoming American Ninja Warrior Season 13 competitions at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington. Organizers invited some 30 teenagers, including Madzelan, to be part of the next wave of American Ninja Warrior adult competitions, which will be broadcast on NBC (locally KGW 8), and which include city qualifying contests in Tacoma starting March 29, city finals in Los Angeles in mid-April, and nationals in Las Vegas in May. ....

If you lived anywhere near Columbia County in the 1970s or 80s, you knew who Ken Shorty Ames was.
If you knew anything about big-school Oregon baseball or football back then, you knew who Shorty Ames was.
And if you grew up in St. Helens in the second half of the 70s or the first half of the 80s, Shorty Ames was nothing short of a legend.
Ames, a 1979 graduate of St. Helens High School, was a three-year starter at quarterback for the Lions and St. Helens best pitcher for all three years of his high school career. He is also a member of St. Helens athletic Hall of Fame. ....

Hops President KL Wombacher says they re planning to play in front of fans as COVID-19 restrictions ease.
With a new level of play, a new coaching staff and a roster that could feature some old fan favorites back at Ron Tonkin Field, the Hillsboro Hops are set to kick off the 2021 season on May 4.
The only minor league baseball team in the Portland metropolitan area, the Hops are now the High-A affiliates of the Arizona Diamondbacks, effectively moving up two levels of play for this season and beyond.
They were formerly members of the Class A Short Season Northwest League, but a full-scale overhaul of minor league baseball over the winter saw the Hops and five other Northwest League teams move up to form a new High-A West circuit, while two other former Northwest League teams will continue to play in independent leagues. ....
