WESTFORD -- The community is mourning the loss of retired Westford Fire Chief George "Yogi" Rogers, the town's first fulltime fire chief. 
"On behalf of Chief  [Joseph]Targ, the Westford Fire Department deeply regrets to announce the passing of Retired Chief George "Yogi" Rogers," Fire Lt. Donald Parsons announced on Jan. 2 on the Westford Fire Department's Facebook page.
Parsons said, "Further information regarding arrangements will be posted when we hear from the family. Please keep the Rogers family in your prayers."

GRPD announced on Thursday that they have filled the open position of Deputy Chief of Police by promotion from within.
Last week the department announced that current Deputy Chief of Police David Kiddle would be retiring after 28 years of service with the Grand Rapids Police Department. This week, Chief Payne announced they'd be promoting East Service Area Captain, Kristen Rogers to the role of Deputy Chief of Police, which also marks a historic moment for the police department.
As Chief Payne said in his announcement,
“This is a very exciting time for the Grand Rapids Police Department. Not only is Deputy Chief Rogers making history by being the first woman to hold the position, she is a talented and experienced leader who will serve Grand Rapids well in the years to come.”

25-year veteran is first woman to hold position

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Captain Kristen Rogers has spent the past 25 years protecting the people of Grand Rapids. Now, she's the police department's Deputy Chief, the first women to hold the role.
Police Chief Eric Payne announced the promotion Thursday morning.
Deputy Chief Rogers is replacing David Kiddle who is retiring after 28 years at GRPD. He served as interim Police Chief before Chief Payne was hired.
Rogers started with the department in 1996, working as a patrol officer before transferring to the Detective Unit for 16 years. In 2012 she was promoted to Sergeant and supervisor of the Family Services Team. Rogers helped coordinate responses to crimes involving children and sexual assault.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Chief of Police Eric Payne has announced the promotion of Captain Kristen Rogers to the position of Deputy Chief of Police -- the first female to hold the position at the department.
“This is a very exciting time for the Grand Rapids Police Department,” Chief Payne said in a news release on Thursday, Dec. 17. “Not only is Deputy Chief Rogers making history by being the first woman to hold the position, she is a talented and experienced leader who will serve Grand Rapids well in the years to come.”
