Twitch Isn't Overwhelmed With Far-Right Extremists, But It Does Have A Big Misinformation Problem

Twitch’s relationship with misinformation is complicated. In 2020, platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter grappled with their outsized roles in the creation and cultivation of conspiracy movements like QAnon. Misinformation troubled Twitch in a different way, but the platform emerged curiously un-plagued by a comparable extremism epidemic. Now, midway through 2021, Twitch is finally gearing up to combat misinformation.
New York Times published a story about extremism on Twitch that overstates the scope of a much more nuanced problem, making it sound like a significant number of far-right influencers fled to Twitch after getting the boot from Facebook and YouTube. The story proceeds to only cite a small handful of specific streamers, one of whom appears to have given up on Twitch a month ago and none of whom have large audiences by Twitch standards. ....

One week ago, today, I met, with delight, the words of the youngest inaugural poet in American history, Amanda Gorman, as President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris took office. With a voice filled with warmth and courage, which resembled the vividness of the ipê trees of my native land, she reminded the world that If we merge mercy with might, and might with right, then love becomes our legacy and change our children s birthright. I wrote this passage of her inaugural poem The Hill We Climb on a piece of paper, in a quest to, somehow, hold to the emotion I first felt that day. Faculty and researchers at the Harvard Kennedy Schoolâs Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy said the role of digital platforms in catalyzing the pro-Trump mob that stormed the Capitol Wednesday exposed an acute need for media accountability.
The rioters used digital platforms including Parler, Telegram, and a pro-Trump website named TheDonald, among others, to plan the events Wednesday afternoon, which left four dead and scores arrested.
Following the Capitol storming, both Facebook and Twitter locked President Donald J. Trumpâs accounts â with Facebookâs ban lasting at least for the rest of his presidency and Twitterâs for 12 hours. Three of Trumpâs tweets marked ârepeated and severe violationsâ of the companyâs Civic Integrity policy, according to a post by Twitter Safety. ....
