The Pandemic Can't End While Wealthy Nations Hoard Shots


Up to this point, vaccine-related ethical questions have mostly been about taking them: Should you accept a shot that’s about to be thrown away? Does increasing herd immunity justify jumping the line? Now the focus is turning to giving. Will affluent countries contribute to the greater good by releasing their hold on so much of the world’s vaccine supply? If they don’t, that could extend the pandemic—and depress global trade, keep borders closed, and provide variants the opportunity to evolve.
“This is a question of global justice, fairness, and morality,” says Gavin Yamey, a physician and director of Duke University’s Center for Policy Impact in Global Health. “There is a very powerful ethical reason why people everywhere should have the right to vaccines as a global public good, and that vaccines should not just be hoarded by rich nations. As wealthy countries pre-order enough doses to inoculate their populations multiple times over, poorer nations lose out on limited vaccine supply.

For people in the U.S., the U.K. and other wealthy nations, getting vaccinated against COVID-19 seems to be just around the corner. 
But for billions around the globe, vaccination likely won t happen until 2022 if not later.
Rich nations are hoarding the supply by going into these advanced purchase agreements, said Gavin Yamey, director of Duke University s Center for Policy Impact in Global Health. 
As a flurry of vaccine candidates moves through clinical trials and approval processes, the U.S. and other rich nations have already pre-ordered enough doses to inoculate their populations multiple times over.  ....
