New recommendations suggest waiting to schedule mammograms following COVID-19 vaccination

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Getting vaccinated for COVID-19 is causing some women unnecessary fear that they might have breast cancer.
New recommendations recently issued by The Society of Breast Imaging suggest waiting to schedule a mammogram for four to six weeks after receiving a COVID vaccine.
Some vaccine patients may experience enlarged lymph nodes which could hinder an accurate mammogram reading.
“If you can not follow these recommendations, then come on in for study. We’re asking you about your vaccination history. And we’re using that information as we interpret your screening mammogram,” said Dr. Taj Kattapuram, radiologist with Gundersen Health System. ....

Breast Density
Women whose breasts have relatively little fat and more connective and glandular tissue are at higher risk of getting breast cancer. In fact, having dense breasts are an even greater risk factor than having a family history of breast cancer although researchers are not certain exactly why that is true. ....
