Cork Harbour's Crosshaven is the Switched-On Place for Race-Winning Plastic Classics

Where other people and places see problems, down Crosshaven way they see opportunities and solutions. Thus although the sailing world generally may be getting increasingly agitated about the fact that fibreglass boats seem to last forever and eventually present a serious disposal problem, around Cork Harbour, they're increasingly showing that the fast fibreglass boats of forty and more years ago are still fast, and with some shrewd selections and skilful re-spray work, bingo! - you've got an interesting racing proposition at a fraction of the cost of a new boat.

Sailing in Dublin Bay Area in 2021 Will Be Resuming on a "Gently Does It" Basis

The spirit of Irish sailing – Ian Hickey's veteran Granada 38 Cavatina (Royal Cork YC) making a perfectly-timed start in the Dun Laoghaire-Dingle race. A successful participant in Fastnet, Round Ireland, Dingle and AZAB races, Cavatina is in the entry list for this year's Dingle Race on June 9th

The welcome announcement that the National Yacht Club's biennial 280-mile Dun Laoghaire to Dingle Race 2021 will be going ahead on Wednesday, June 9th, is encouraging. But it should not be seen as a clarion call to get the 2021 sailing season into full boisterous swing with all the traditionally noisy bells and whistles, and lively post-racing shoreside celebrations.

July’s Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta 2021 has been cancelled due to the ongoing "uncertainties" over the Covid-19 pandemic.
The scrubbing of Ireland's biggest regatta, scheduled for the first two weekends of July, comes after careful consideration of the latest government announcement and discussion with event stakeholders at Dun Laoghaire Harbour.
The biennial event, which had attracted a bigger than expected fleet of 385 boats to date, will not now be sailed in 2021 but returns on schedule in July 2023.

Entries for Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta (VDLR) are beyond expectations for July's event giving organisers the opportunity to close the entry system at the end of April to review the 320 boats received so far.
Ireland's biggest regatta on Dublin Bay is planning to facilitate social distancing with its cautious approach to fleet sizes and by implementing a new regatta format that splits the fleets over two weekends.

Bridich the Brain Surgeon Strikes Again

Bridich the Brain Surgeon Strikes Again

It's now official. The Colorado Rockies have cornered the market on inept general managers. First, it was Don O'Dowd, who upon landing the job as Rockies G.M. in 1999, traded Dante Bichette for a reliever with M.S. and hired Buddy Bell as manager who had been nothing short of awful is in his first stint as a manager. Then, when Jeff Bridich was hired in 2014, he promptly traded Troy Tulowitzski for three pitchers who had altitude sickness. He followed that up by signing the four horseman of the apocalypse (Dunn, Davis, McGee, and Shaw) to long term deals. But Bridich the brain surgeon has managed to top himself by trading the best third baseman on the planet and $50 million in cash for--wait for it--Austin Gomber who is currently a long reliever, 3 middling prospects, and $149 million in salary relief. If John Sterling were the Rockies' play-by-play man, I can hear his call now--Gomber gives up another bomber!

Irish Sailing Fixtures for 2021? The Best Plan is to Keep Planning

19th December 2020
The National YC's biennial Volvo Dun Laoghaire to Dingle Race, currently scheduled for June 9th 2021, could become symbolic of the emergence from pandemic. In normal times, the yearly Irish sailing fixtures list is a reasonably harmonious programme based around annual or biennial pillar events of various types and sizes, an ongoing succession of regattas and championships which slot together in a reasonably meaningful structure which is dictated by traditional times of the year, and the needs of the bigger one design classes – particularly the dinghies – to find a location which will accommodate them for their annual national championship.
