'The new rules don't make sense,' Quebec parents and students respond to prom being cancelled

After Quebec public health authorities told graduating students and parents that proms will not happen this year and graduation ceremonies should be held virtually or in class bubbles, some students and parents are asking why.
We have waited five years to graduate, said graduating Kuper Academy student Taya Jacobs. All the rules are being lifted and now the new rules don’t make sense. We are willing to follow certain measures that make sense, but to be told no prom and a graduation with no parents doesn’t make any sense. We should be treated like young adults. ....

When Crystal Rodriguez made an appointment for the Pfizer vaccine at a local clinic, her husband was hesitant to join her. He relented after a little nudging.
They both received their first dose with few side effects. Rodriguez felt a sense of relief as she went about her daily routine with her three children.
But by the time they were due to schedule their second dose, Rodriguez’s husband had been influenced by his peers, by social media, she was not sure exactly what.
“Somebody got to his head,” the 33-year-old East Los Angeles resident said. Her husband refused to go. ....

The city of Redding has long been known for its 300-plus days of sunshine each year and proximity to lush hiking trails and alpine lakes.
Now, the Shasta County community has become a political tinderbox. Residents are increasingly divided over the health risks posed by the pandemic, governmental power and the degree to which a local armed militia should be able to take matters into its own hands, write my colleagues Anita Chabria and Hailey Branson-Potts.
Tensions came to a head on May 4 when Carlos Zapata a high-profile militia member and a leader in a movement to recall three Republican Shasta County supervisors who supported Gov. Gavin Newsom’s pandemic health orders allegedly assaulted Black Lives Matter activist Nathan Pinkney at a trendy local restaurant. ....
