Thailand reported a record 1,582 COVID-19 cases on Friday after this week’s celebration of the traditional Thai New Year or Songkran festival.
The new cases marked the highest number in a single day since the start of the pandemic and the fifth record daily tally this week.
The Buddhist-majority country s COVID-19 Situation Administration Center said the new cases took the total number of infections to 39,038, with deaths remaining at 97.
By province, Bangkok logged 312 new cases, Chiang Mai 272, Chon Buri 111, Prachuap Khiri Khan 100, Songkhla 89, and Lampang 59. ....

Thailand plans international medical tourism complex

The island of Phuket’s administration is waiting for Thailand’s Public Health Ministry to approve a THB343 million (US$11 million) budget, to prepare for the construction of an international medical tourism complex at Vachira Phuket Hospital.
The Thai government’s medical tourism board has approved the proposal. A further TBH1.4 billion (US$44 million) will be needed for the construction of the complex and its supporting facilities, and the cost will be covered by a joint investment between the government and the private sector. It is hoped the medical tourism and health services complex will be a part of the province’s tourism appeal. ....

Recap: Global stocks and emerging markets hovered near record highs as investors bet on more US pandemic relief spending, despite signs of fresh US-China tension, while European stocks fell with retail and energy shares posting losses.
The SET index moved in a range of 1,503.19 and 1,529.49 points before ending a holiday-shortened week at 1,508.35 on Thursday, up 0.8% from the previous week, in daily turnover averaging 92.12 billion baht.
Foreign investors were net buyers of 3.11 billion baht. Brokerage firms bought 2.82 billion, while retail investors purchased 1.42 billion baht. Institutional investors were net sellers of 7.35 billion baht worth of shares. ....

Some 600 Myanmar migrants working in Thailand’s Samut Sakhon province are among more than 800 confirmed COVID-19 cases linked to the Talay Thai wholesale shrimp market, the site of the country’s worst outbreak so far, which was first reported last Thursday.
On Monday morning, 126 new cases were reported in Samut Sakhon, taking the total linked to the outbreak to 820 since Dec. 17. Of these, about 600 are Myanmar workers, according to U Aung Kyaw, the director of the advocacy group Migrant Workers Rights Network. ....
