We recommend six novels this week, among them a romantic comedy about frozen yogurt, a look at life in the Airbnb age, and the sequel to Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer-winning “The Sympathizer.” In nonfiction, we like four books that touch on various aspects of race in America, including a memoir by a Black woman who was raised by white parents, an analysis of the harm that racism inflicts on society at large, and two biographies: one about the notorious white supremacist John C. Calhoun, who served as a senator and vice president in the 19th century, and the other a group biography about the mothers of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr. and James Baldwin. ....

Hinton Rowan Helper was an unreserved bigot from North Carolina who wrote hateful, racist tracts during Reconstruction. He was also, in the years leading up to the Civil War, a determined abolitionist.
His 1857 book, âThe Impending Crisis of the South,â argued that chattel slavery had deformed the Southern economy and impoverished the region. Members of the plantation class refused to invest in education, in enterprise, in the community at large, because they didnât have to. Helperâs concern wasnât the enslaved Black people brutalized by what he called the âlords of the lashâ; he was worried about the white laborers in the South, relegated by the slave economy and its ruling oligarchs to a âcesspool of ignorance and degradation.â ....

When Heather McGhee was a 25-year-old staffer at Demos, the progressive think tank she would eventually lead, she went to Congress to present findings on shocking increases in individual and family debt.
“Few politicians in Washington knew what it was like to have bill collectors incessantly ringing their phones about balances that kept growing every month,” McGhee writes in her new book, “The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together.”
Demos’s explanatory attempts failed. When Congress finally took action in 2005, it made the problem worse, passing a bankruptcy bill that made escaping unsustainable debt harder than ever. For McGhee, the disaster was an education in the limits of research, which is often no match for the brute power of big money. But as she was walking down the hallway of the Russell Senate Office Building, she learned something else. ....
