Darke Co. Solid Waste seeks comment on plan update Staff report DARKE COUNTY The Darke County Solid Waste Management District Policy Committee is announcing a thirty-day public review and comment period for the five-year Darke County Solid Waste Management Plan Update. The public comment period will start on May 11, 2021, and will extend through June 9, 2021. The Policy Committee will conduct a public hearing on June 23, 2021, at 2:30 p.m. in the Commissioner’s Boardroom, at 520 S. Broadway, Greenville. The plan will be available on the Solid Waste District website at co.darke.oh.us/solidwaste/2021%20Proposed%20Plan.html The version of the Darke County Solid Waste Management Plan under which the District is currently operating was approved by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency on Aug. 15, 2015. Councilman Russ Jehl, R-2nd, said many constituents have contacted him about delays ranging from a couple of days to a couple of weeks. “People are frustrated,” he said. “Usually there s a reason, like construction, but that s not a sufficient excuse to not have a solution for extended periods of time.” ....

Composting reduces the amount of food waste entering landfills, where anaerobic conditions cause the organic matter to emit methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Furthermore, studies have found that applied compost helps with carbon sequestration, further battling climate change. Despite these benefits, composting can also carry a negative connotation. It s too smelly, too complicated, or too time-consuming. But, at the most basic level, composting is the aerobic process of breaking down organic matter by microorganisms. ....
