The ‘snackification’ trend is at an all-time high with 25% of Americans confessing to snacking multiple times a day and 40% even admitting to replace a traditional sit-down meal with a snack.
The industry has certainly motivated to capitalise on this behaviour, pumping almost
$14 billion annually on advertising in the US,​​ according to the Uconn Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity analysis of Nielsen data. More than 80% of this advertising promotes sugar and fat-laden snacks, fast food, sugary drinks and candy, dwarfing the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s entire $1 billion budget for all chronic disease prevention and health ....

Fresh calls for regulation of junk food marketing in Germany: ‘Voluntary commitments cannot work’
Voluntary codes to limit the marketing of unhealthy food and beverages to children ‘cannot work’, according to the Federation of German Consumer Organisations. The association is calling for tougher action.
Voluntary business commitments fail to ‘effectively protect children’ from the marketing of ‘unbalanced foods’. That is the conclusion of a new report commissioned by the Federation of German Consumer Organisations (VZBV).
The research, authored by Dr Peter von Philipsborn, an MD and nutrition expert from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, found existing voluntary commitments exclude ‘important forms of marketing’ – such as packaging targeting children and digital exposure - and offer ‘numerous loopholes’ due to vague definitions. ....

The great SKU rationalization last Spring caused by pandemic-related supply chain constraints and consumer stockpiling not only forced CPG companies to pause production temporarily of some products, but it prompted many to reevaluate their product mix and overall portfolios long-term – triggering an industry-wide reshuffling of brands that could reset the scoreboard in the coming years.
