Historical marker honoring the Graetz to be unveiled in Sunday ceremony

The late Robert and Jeannie Graetz, who endured multiple attacks due to their support of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, will be honored Sunday during a ceremony to unveil a historic marker outside their home on Dunbar Street. 
It s something that is long overdue, historian Richard Bailey, who organized the ceremony, said. When we reflect on the contribution of Robert and Jeannie Gratez, we find a couple that dedicated their lives for the advancement of humanity, specifically civil rights.
The historical marker will be unveiled Sunday at 2 p.m. Mayor Steven Reed will open the ceremony and several speakers, including Attorney Fred Gray, will share their memories with the Graetz family. Bailey also compiled a 50-page souvenir program for those who attend. His hope, Bailey said, is to give people who were not in Montgomery or alive during the boycott a better understanding and appr ....

Meta Ellis is April's Community Hero for Montgomery community building


At the end of a long week, Meta Ellis had a few minutes to recline into a chartreuse couch in downtown Montgomery’s Bayard Rustin Community Center and Thrift Store. 
Ellis, director of Montgomery Pride United and co-founder of the center, had just wrapped up discussions on distributing a settlement reward from the city to homeless plaintiffs over a punitive 2019 panhandling law. Stacks of home goods surrounded the couch, awaiting sorting for an upcoming silent auction to benefit the center even as more donations were dropped at the front door by the hour. Her phone trilled on and off from LGBTQ liaisons around the city. ....

A United Methodist Church bishop in the West African nation of Sierra Leone died in a traffic accident in August as he was engaged in efforts to resolve the denomination s conflicts over inclusion of LGBTQ people. Back in March, a 49-year-old priest in Brooklyn became the first Catholic cleric in the United States killed by the coronavirus.
