Amazon violated employees' rights by firing outspoken workers: Labour board

The National Labour Relations Board has found that two outspoken Amazon workers were illegally fired last year.
Both employees, Emily Cunningham and Maren Costa, worked at Amazon offices in Seattle and publicly criticised the company, pushing it to do more to reduce its impact on climate change and to better protect warehouse workers from the coronavirus.
Cunningham shared with The Associated Press an email from the NLRB, which said it found that Amazon violated the rights of the two workers. The government agency also confirmed on Monday that it found merit in the case. The news was first reported by The New York Times. ....

Amazon Considered Opening a Chain of Discount Stores

Another purported casualty of the coronavirus pandemic has surfaced, folks: Amazon brick-and-mortar discount stores. Yep, the e-commerce giant considered opening up permanent retail locations to peddle unsold inventory before the world descended into lockdown, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

While the fallout from covid-19 s spread has shuttered a record number of stores across America and recent consumer surveys suggest that folks are increasingly opting out of shopping in person, as they have been for years now, discount chains are some of the few brick-and-mortar stores weathering this larger retail meltdown. And if any company has enough billions in capital and resources to throw at such a venture, it’s Amazon. The company took in more than $125 billion in sales during the last quarter of 2020, according to Statista. ....

New York Attorney General Sues Amazon Over 'Flagrant Disregard' For Covid Safety

New York Attorney General Sues Amazon Over Flagrant Disregard For Covid Safety
Photo: Spencer Platt (Getty Images)
Early on in the pandemic New York Attorney General Letitia James promised an investigation into Amazon’s safety practices and, by god, she delivered.

Last night, James filed an expansive lawsuit against Amazon with the New York State Supreme Court for a myriad of alleged failures to adequately protect workers from covid-19 and retaliation against whistleblowers. Amazon, anticipating the allegations, fired off a preemptive lawsuit last week asking a New York federal court to toss out James’s forthcoming suit. Barring the sliver of a chance that Amazon gets a swift victory in its opening salvo, prepare for a bitter war. ....

Amazon Requests Its Alabama Union Vote Be In-Person

Photo: Ina Fassbender (Getty Images)
Amazon has a message for its workers: if you want to unionize so badly, you’ll need to risk catching the coronavirus to do it.

That’s according to an appeal the e-commerce giant filed with the National Labor Relations Board on Thursday arguing against the board’s decision to give Amazon’s Bessemer warehouse workers the next two months to vote on their potential unionization by mail. Instead, Amazon asked to postpone the vote so the Board can take time to “reconsider” its decision and possibly allow the online retailer to force an in-person vote despite the obvious health hazards. ....
