The exceptional drought in the U.S. West has people across the region on edge after the record-setting fires of 2020. Last year, Colorado alone saw its three largest fires in recorded state history, one burning late in October and crossing the barren Continental Divide well above the tree line.

Those fires didn’t just feel extreme. Evidence now shows the 2020 fire season pushed these ecosystems to levels of burning unprecedented for at least 2,000 years.

Revisiting Wildfires In The West On Wednesday's Access Utah

Credit sciencemag.org
In a commentary published recently at Mongabay.com, Paul Rogers, a forest ecologist and Director of the Western Aspen Alliance at Utah State University, argues that forest managers’ “goal should not be to stop wildfire but to reduce conflicts with it.”
The headline for the piece is: “First the savior, now the villain: Fire suppression is often overhyped in the American west.”
Today we’ll talk about wildfires in the West with Paul Rogers and Larissa Yokum, Assistant Professor of Fire Ecology in the USU Department of Wildland Resources and the USU Ecology Center.

BLM plans broadcast prescribed burn in Campbell County | Bureau of Land Management

BLM plans broadcast prescribed burn in Campbell County
BUFFALO, Wyo. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Buffalo Field Office is planning a broadcast burn when conditions are safe on BLM and private lands in north central Campbell County.
If conditions are safe, burning will occur before spring green-up. Depending on snow cover this winter, burning may begin as early as February but more likely will occur in March or April.  All prescribed burn projects are conducted in accordance with approved burn plans which specify weather, smoke dispersal, and fuel moisture conditions.
The area for the planned burn is in the Collins Road and Horse Creek Road area, BLM has completed thinning and slash burning in ponderosa pine forests, and conditions permitting, will follow with broadcast burning to reduce surface fuels such as needle litter and downed dead trees and limbs.
