The Supreme Court (SC) judgment in which the court accepted the review petition filed by Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s wife is like a breath of fresh air in a country where such news is rare. It has raised hopes of millions that believe that the independence of the judiciary is essential for a country to survive and exist. The SC has sent a clear message that any attempt to harass a judge for any judgment given by him by the executive and others who consider themselves above the constitution will be resisted by a majority of judges. Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s illustrious father, Late Qazi Isa, one of the staunchest supporters of Quaid-e-Azam, must be proud of his son. ....

The guilty verdict against former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on all counts was correct, based on the evidence, but the theatrics leading up to that trial and after the jurors had made their decision was outrageous.
Demonstrations, riots and looting around the country since the death of George Floyd had to have influenced the jury, the media and public opinion.
Comments before, during and after the trial by politicians were unhelpful to put it mildly. Rep. Maxine Waters represents a district in California. Why did she go to Minnesota to urge people to âstay on the streetâ and âget more confrontationalâ if Chauvin was acquitted? She did something similar when she urged those opposed to Donald Trump to show up at restaurants, gas stations and other public places and get in the faces of Trump officials. Waters denied she was inciting lawless behavior, but she had no problem claiming Trump encouraged the January 6 ins ....

For most legal observers, the decision that the Supreme Court of Pakistan delivered on April 26 will go a long way in the judicial history of Pakistan. The SC accepted all review petitions challenging the court’s judgment in the presidential reference against Justice Qazi Faez Isa, except the one that the judge himself had filed. The 10-member bench heard the review petitions filed against the SC’s June 19, 2020, judgment on the presidential reference. While quashing the presidential reference, the Supreme Court had empowered the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to conduct an inquiry into offshore assets of Justice Isa’s wife. Now the SC has stated that the directions and reasons that the majority judgment had given are no more valid. ....

Watching the webcast of the recent Rip Curl Narrabeen Classic brought to mind professional events I’d seen held at the very same spot back in the late 1970s. The top surfers of the day included guys like Mark Richards, Simon Anderson, Rabbit Bartholomew, Peter Townend, Terry Fitzgerald, Terry Richardson and Dane Kealoha, with hot groms Tommy Carroll and Cheyne Horan nipping at their heels.
These were the best surfers in the world, competing in front of throngs of enthusiastic Aussie surf fans for the sport’s biggest prize purses and all-important tour rankings. At first thought, not so dissimilar from what went down last week at Narrabeen…aside from one clear difference (and I’m not talking about personal lockers and non-elimination rounds.) ....
