Grapevine trunk diseases (GTDs) represent a serious threat to vineyards worldwide causing substantial economic and yield losses. To date, no curative methods are available and the connection between pathogen and symptom expression is not completely understood [
1]. Among the GTDs, Botryosphaeria dieback (BD) is considered a serious problem worldwide causing cankers, dieback and eventually death of vines. At least 27 species of Botryosphaeriaceae are associated with BD, although only 11 species have been reported in Australian vineyards to date [
1]. In Europe, the disease is also associated with foliar symptoms, although these symptoms have not been reported in Australian vineyards [ ....

Touched by Light: Photoexcited Stannyl Anions Are Great for Producing Organotin Compounds

Published: May 14, 2021
Scientists at Tokyo Institute of Technology developed a new strategy for producing a wide range of organotin compounds, which are the building blocks of many organic synthesis methods. Their approach is based on the photoexcitation of stannyl anions, which alters their electronic state and increases their selectivity and reactivity to form useful compounds. This protocol will be helpful for the efficient synthesis of many bioactive products, novel drugs, and functional materials.
Organotin compounds, also known as stannanes, are made of tin (Sn), hydrocarbons, and sometimes other elements like nitrogen and oxygen. During the 1970s, stannanes rapidly took the spotlight as building blocks in the field of organic synthesis mainly because of their use as reagents in the Stille reaction, which remains essential for chemists to combine various organic molecules. ....

YABATECH researchers win Ford Foundation's $100,000 grant

YABATECH researchers win Ford Foundation’s $100,000 grant
The first grant they won in 2019 was used to develop an institutional policy on sexual harassment and gender-based policy, as well as set up a museum for the college.
The
Yaba College of Technologyin Lagos State has described as laudable, winning of 100,000 USD Ford Foundation grant by three of its researchers/staff members.
A Deputy Registrar of the college, Joe Ejiofor, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos that the fund would further support efforts to develop the institution.
Mr Ejiofor listed the three researchers who jointly wrote a proposal that won the grant to include Dr Adeleke Abiodun of the Department of Chemical Science and Dr Funmilayo Doherty of the Department of Biological Science. ....
