Emperor Constantine's hand reunited with finger after more than 500 years apart


A missing index finger from a giant statue of the Roman Emperor Constantine has been reunited with the hand it came from after over 500 years.
The fragment finally arrived at Rome s Capitoline Museum from the Louvre in Paris.
It had been revealed as a missing part of Constantine s hand in 2018 when a 3D model was brought to Rome and proved to be a perfect fit. It had at one time been catalogued as a toe.
With the arrival of the actual bronze, finger experts examined it carefully to check it hadn t suffered further damage.
So we are going to take a close look at all the elements to check it was well conserved on its journey, explained Francoise Gaultier, Director of the Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities at the Louvre. ....

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences announced the election of its new members for 2021, which includes two faculty members from The Ohio State University College of Arts and Sciences: Fritz Graf, Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Classics, and Stewart Shapiro, the Steve R. and Sarah E. O’Donnell Professor of Philosophy.
“Being elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is one of the highest honors that a scholar can receive from their peers,” said Gretchen Ritter, executive dean and vice provost of the College of Arts and Sciences. “This is a mark of distinction for Fritz and Stewart and for the impact of humanities scholarship at Ohio State.” ....

LGBT History Month zoom event hijacked by homophobia, transphobia

An LGBT+ History Month seminar for under-18s was interrupted by a cyber attacker who shouted homophobic, transphobic and racist slurs.
Education non-profit Academus Education was hosting a digital think tank event in celebration of LGBT+ History Month when it was “attacked by a group of 15 cyber terrorists”, managing director Emily Shead told
PinkNews.
Academus, a free education service for students who haven’t had access to Classical education, had been online for just 15 minutes before the attack.
Shead said the hackers “took over all our controls and began spreading messages of hate” – sharing antisemitic imagery, searching the internet for pornography, shouting “just about every slur you can imagine” and spamming the chat. ....
