A Beninese court in Cotonou has ordered that Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, should be returned to police custody pending further investigation. This order is coming after a 13-hour hearing, which ended at around 11:20 pm on Monday, July 26, 2021. The case was heard behind closed doors, as the court placed some restrictions on attendance, granting access to only lawyers, Igboho’s wife, Ropo, who was just released from police detention in Cotonou, and a few others in the courtroom. According to a report from Punch, journalists and Igboho’s supporters who thronged the court in large numbers were barred from the court proceedings, so details of the judgment have been sketchy as of the time of filing this report.

Juil 23, 2021 Sunday Igboho était hier face à la justice au Tribunal de Cotonou L’affaire est compliquée. Les partisans de Sunday Adeyemo, connu sous le nom de Sunday Igboho, étaient jeudi au tribunal de Cotonou en soutien à cet activiste nigérian arrêté à l’aéroport de Cotonou le lundi 19 juillet dernier. Ce jeudi, le prévenu a été présenté au procureur de la République, mais l’affaire a été renvoyée à ce vendredi 23 juillet. Recherché par toutes les polices du Nigeria et sous le coup d’un mandat d’arrêt international, Sunday Igboho a pu échapper aux forces de l’ordre de son pays, avant d’être rattrapé à Cotonou lui et son épouse Ropo. Mais pendant que la justice béninoise s’active sur le dossier, le Bénin ne montre aucun empressement à livrer le fugitif au gouvernement nigérian. Le 1er juillet dernier, un contingent de la Department of State Security (DSS), une unité d’élite de la police nigériane, avait pris d’assaut sa résidence située à Ibadan, dans l’Etat d’Oyo. Des armes de guerre et des documents jugés compromettants avaient été saisis. Cette descente musclée avait occasionné deux morts parmi les résidents, tandis que Sunday Igboho avait réussi à s’enfuir avec son épouse de nationalité allemande. Une chasse à l’homme avait été lancée dans tout le pays pour le retrouver, mais sans succès. L’activiste qui revendique la création d’une nation Yorouba qui se détacherait de la fédération nigériane, est connu pour ses violentes diatribes contre cette fédération. Le gouvernement nigérian l’accuse de sécession et de détention d’armes de guerre. Il cherche à l’arrêter notamment pour mettre un terme à la montée vertigineuse de la contestation d’une partie des Yorouba nigérians. Ceux-ci organisent régulièrement des mouvements de protestation dans les Etats yorouba de la fédération nigériane.
