Early bird or night owl? Study links shift worker sleep to 'chronotype'

 E-Mail
Getting enough sleep can be a real challenge for shift workers affecting their overall health. But what role does being an early bird or night owl play in getting good rest? Researchers from McGill University find a link between chronotype and amount of sleep shift workers can get with their irregular schedules.
"Some people seem to be hardwired to sleep early, while others tend to sleep late. This preference, called chronotype, is modulated by our circadian system - each person's unique internal timekeeper," says lead author Diane B. Boivin, a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University.

Partnership enables new Brain Canada initiative addressing research and care gaps highlighted by the COVID-19 crisis
MONTRÉAL, Jan. 26, 2021 /CNW Telbec/ - Brain Canada and Bell Let's Talk today announced the new Bell Let's Talk-Brain Canada Mental Health Research Program to accelerate Canadian brain research while helping to address the impacts of COVID-19 on mental health care. Funding for the program is made up of a $2 million gift from Bell Let's Talk matched by the federal government through the Canada Brain Research Fund (CBRF).
"As brain health becomes an increasingly prominent societal issue, there is a growing need for scientific data to support new treatments," said Dr. Mona Nemer, Canada's Chief Science Advisor. "This new research program is taking great steps to address the complexity of these challenges by promoting collaborative and cross-disciplinary research."

Canadians leave their Christmas lights on to get through dark times

OTTAWA --
Some Canadians are choosing to leave their Christmas lights on a little longer this year in a bid to keep the holiday cheer going during these dark times.
In Kitchener, Ont., Mayor Berry Vrbanovic is encouraging his constituents to keep their Christmas lights on until the end of January, in hopes the lights will help spread some cheer as COVID-19 cases rise and lockdown measures continue.
“It's just going to give them that hope -- that positivity -- that is really going to be needed to get them through the dark and dreary months that we have to get through as Canadians every year, and this year is going to be particularly challenging,” he told CTV News.
