City seeking a new batch of marine haulout proposals

City seeking a new batch of marine haulout proposals
Posted by Katherine Rose | Jan 28, 2021

For the next two months it will be seeking a developer to privately fund the haulout project–but that now comes with a stop-gap if the developer wants to purchase city-owned property outright.
The Sitka Assembly and the industrial park board have pushed to build a marine haulout at the park over the last year. But they’ve hit some snags along the way. A haulout is necessary for Sitka’s fishing fleet, and after Halibut Point Marine announced it would soon shut down its haulout operation, many called for the city to fund a shipyard. ....

The city is moving forward with plans to sell the former Sitka Community Hospital building. And the public may get a chance to weigh in during the municipal election next October. But in order for that to happen, the city has to move quickly.
Last fall, the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium approached the city, interested in purchasing the former Sitka Community Hospital Building. In 2019, SEARHC bought the city-owned hospital business, and opted to lease the building where it continues to house long-term care. But now Sitka’s primary health provider is growing, with a $300 million dollar hospital expansion project planned over the next five years, and they need the space. ....

Tribal health groups are vaccinating teens and healthy adults for COVID-19, a virus that hits Alaska Native people at disproportionate rates.

Dave Nicolai got an unexpected phone call Wednesday morning.
The 36-year-old engineer was suddenly eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination through his health care provider, Southcentral Foundation.
