Town officials, civic leaders sound the alarm on affordable housing

Town officials, civic leaders sound the alarm on affordable housing
The lack of affordable and workforce housing in Southold Town, for years a critical issue facing local officials, has grown far worse since the real estate boom of the past year.
That was the unmistakable message at Wednesday night’s affordable housing discussion on Zoom sponsored by North Fork civic associations. More than 60 people listened in, spoke or passed along electronic questions to the main speakers.
“The issue of affordable housing impacts the entire community,” said Pat Lutsky, co-chair of the town’s Affordable Housing Commission, who participated in the panel discussion.  ....

Stimulus funds expected to help with pandemic-related costs for East End districts

An influx of stimulus funding is expected to begin flowing to local schools under the American Rescue Plan signed by President Joe Biden last month.
The $1.9 trillion stimulus package included aid to local governments and direct checks to most Americans. It also included $120 billion in funding for education, with Long Island schools slated to receive nearly $324 million in rescue aid, according to figures released by Sen. Charles Schumer’s office.
While details on the parameters of those funds, which would largely be allocated based on the number of students living below the poverty line, are still emerging, local superintendents embraced the idea of additional funding. Schools will also receive increased federal aid from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act and Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, according to state aid projections. ....

NEW YORK In comparison to other states, New York has gotten more of its younger residents but fewer of its senior citizens vaccinated against the coronavirus.
New York only opened vaccination eligibility to residents age 30 - 50 on Thursday. For those 16 - 30, eligibility just started Tuesday.
A new report from the Empire Center, an Albany-based think tank, parses data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control that show New York 44th among states in the vaccination of residents age 65 and older, but 9th among states for immunizing the population between 18 and 65.
