COVID-19 infection rates are once again rising dramatically across Canada driven by new, more contagious and lethal variants. Yet all levels of government are prioritizing corporate profits over human lives and adamantly refusing to take the urgent public health measures needed to prevent a catastrophic third wave of the pandemic and mass death.
Last Thursday, Ontario Conservative Premier Doug Ford ordered a totally ineffectual 28-day “shutdown” that has been denounced by health experts and even sections of the corporate media as too little, too late. Similar “shutdowns” were announced last week in British Columbia, Quebec and in the Atlantic provinces, while doctors in Alberta have unsuccessfully implored Premier Jason Kenney and his United Conservative Party government to apply an “emergency brake” to its reckless re-opening policies. ....

The province announced changes to several regions, late Friday afternoon, including two new lockdowns.
“While we continue to see the number of cases and other public health indicators lowering in many regions across the province, the recent modelling shows us that we must be nimble and put in place additional measures to protect Ontarians and stop the spread of COVID-19,” said Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, in a news release. “With COVID-19 variants continuing to spread in our communities, it is critically important that everyone continues strictly adhering to all public health and workplace safety measures to help contain the virus and maintain the progress we have made to date.” ....

Ontario school reopening dates to be announced on Wednesday: Education Minister Stephen Lecce

The Ontario government says it will let parents know on Wednesday when to expect their children’s schools to reopen.
In a tweet Monday afternoon, Education Minister Stephen Lecce said the province will have its final advice on the matter by the middle of the week.
“The Chief Medical Officer of Health confirmed to Premier ‪@fordnation & I that on Wednesday he will finalize his advice,” Lecce wrote. “The Government will provide certainty parents deserve by announcing on Wednesday the dates for reopening.”
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams said Monday that he would like see all schools in the province reopen next week but will be seeking input from each region’s medical officer of health before finalizing any plans. ....
