Cork County Council has recruited international experts to advise on what steps it should take to deal with the grounded ‘ghost ship’, MV Alta which washed up on the coast near Ballycotton a year ago today. The 77m freighter drifted across the Atlantic after the US Coast Guard rescued her crew of 10, who had been en route from Greece to Haiti, some 2,000km southeast of Bermuda in October 2018. She finally came to rest when washed on to rocks at Ballyandreane in east Cork by Storm Denis. ....

A 46-year-old plumber has been jailed for three years for striking another man with a poker and threatening to destroy his house and car during a row over a parking space. Gavin Craven from Glenfield Avenue, Ballyvolane, Co Cork, also claimed to be a member of the IRA during the incident. He pleaded guilty on Monday at Cork Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing harm to a man at Liffey Park, Mayfield, in early August 2020, contrary to section three of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997. ....
