Founded in 1971, the Pacific Island Forum’s leadership title of secretary general has been held mostly by Polynesian candidates. This year’s election, Micronesia was up for the title. But to the small northern Pacific islands’ disappointment, a long standing “gentlemen’s agreement” was not upheld. Over the years, it seems this agreement has been overlooked many times. Since this organization was founded, only one term, between the years of 1992-1998, has been served by a member of the sub-region of Micronesia as the secretary general. ....
