bp and Equinor partner on US offshore wind

bp and Equinor have completed the formation of their strategic US offshore wind partnership. This includes bp’s US$1.1 billion purchase from Equinor of a 50% interest in two major lease areas off the US East Coast. The new partnership will develop up to 4.4 GW through two projects – Empire Wind and Beacon Wind – and together pursue further growth in the US offshore wind market.
The completion of the partnership follows the recent success of the Empire Wind 2 and Beacon Wind 1 projects in being selected to provide New York State with 2.5 GW of power. This is the biggest US offshore wind award to date. Together with the existing award to supply 816 MW from the Empire Wind 1 development, this represents a total commitment to provide 3.3 GW of renewable offshore wind energy to the State of New York. ....

More Wind Farms On the Horizon

As East Hampton prepares the final agreements to allow the South Fork Wind Farm cable to come ashore in Wainscott, the future of offshore wind off Long Island’s coast has become much more crowded.
Two massive offshore wind farms with more than 90 turbines each, to be built by the firm Equinor, received approval from New York State in early January, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced in his State of the State Address Jan. 13. They include the Empire Wind 2 project 20 miles offshore from Jones Beach, and Beacon Wind 1, which will be 60 miles east-southeast of Montauk. The transmission cable for the Beacon Wind 1 project would travel about 200 miles under the Long Island Sound to a grid tie-in in Astoria, Queens. ....

South Brooklyn Marine Terminal To Become A Wind Turbine Assembly and Maintenance Plant, Bringing 1,200 Jobs To Sunset Park
Elizabeth Yeampierre estimates that her team at UPROSE – the Brooklyn community-based environmental justice organization she oversees – has been advocating for the creation of green jobs along the industrial waterfront of Sunset Park for over two decades.
“I found a flyer the other day at UPROSE that was dated ‘97 or ‘98,” said Yeampierre, who’s served as executive director to the Sunset Park-based organization since 1996.
So, it felt like a long-deserved victory when on Jan. 13 the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) approved plans to transform the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT) into a wind turbine assembly and maintenance plant, answering the calls of groups like UPROSE and bringing with it over one thousand green jobs to the area. ....
