Memphis Byhalia Pipeline Project Plains All American fighting regulations

Plains All American Pipeline L.P., the midstream company behind the abandoned Byhalia Connection Pipeline project, decided it wanted a few last words Tuesday.
Cory Thornton, an attorney for Plains, told the Memphis City Council the ordinance that would've governed the crude oil pipeline and its potential impact on the Memphis Sand Aquifer was unnecessary, "anti-industry" and that the measure if passed, would be overturned by the courts.
The company announced Friday that it had abandoned the pipeline project, citing a drop in crude oil demand. The decision to abandon the project also came after it encountered widespread opposition to the project from Memphis activists, celebrities and city government.

In Win For Activists, Oil Pipeline Through Memphis Cancelled

Community activists in Memphis, Tennessee and northwest Mississippi celebrated a grassroots victory on Saturday after two oil companies canceled plans to build a pipeline that would have run through wetlands and several low-income, majority-Black neighborhoods.
Valero and Plains All American Pipeline had long planned to construct the Byhalia Connection pipeline, which would have been 49 miles long and linked two pipelines that transport crude oil to refineries on the Gulf of Mexico.
The two companies announced they were canceling the project “ due to lower U.S. oil production resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic," but opponents of the pipeline noted that the announcement followed grassroots organizing by climate action advocates, homeowners, and elected officials at the local and federal levels.

Plains All American abandons Byhalia pipeline. How Memphis reacted.

U.S. crude oil production dropped from an estimated 12.25 million barrels per day in 2019 to 11.31 million barrels per day in 2020, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Oil production has dropped to an estimated 11.08 million barrels per day so far in 2021, but was projected to increase to 11.79 million barrels in 2022.
The company statement continued: "We value the relationships we’ve built through the development of this project, and appreciate those that supported the project and would have shared in its ongoing benefits including our customers, communities, energy consumers, landowners, area contractors and suppliers.
“Pipelines continue to play a critical role in safely transporting energy products from where energy is produced to where it is refined and turned into consumer goods that benefit our lives. As part of any shift to lower carbon energy, hydrocarbons will continue to be a critical part of meeting increasing global need for affordable, reliable energy.”

MPD: 2 juveniles stabbed after fight in South Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two young people are in the hospital late Monday evening after being stabbed in South Memphis, according to Memphis Police.
Officers are on the scene of a wounding at 38 Ila Ct. Two juveniles were stabbed. Both were xported to LeBonheur. The female is listed as non-critical, and the male is listed as critical.
Prelim info indicates that the incident stemmed from a fight in the 1700 block of Kansas.— Memphis Police Dept (@MEM_PoliceDept) July 6, 2021
Memphis Police said the incident happened near 38 Ila Court, which is in the Washington Manor Apartments, near the intersection of Florida and Belz. When officers arrived, they located two young people with stab wounds.
