Gov. Gretchen Whitmer pitches big expansion of Michigan's free preschool for 4-year-olds

Combined with a separate $45 million increase proposed in Whitmer’s 2021-22 budget in May, the governor’s efforts, if approved, represent a stunning financial shot in the arm for a program that has been proven to improve academic skills of participants.
The additional funds would guarantee enough classroom seats for every eligible 4-year old whose family chooses to participate. Eligibility guidelines would remain the same, with children from families earning up to 250 percent of the federal poverty line ($66,250 for a family of four, for example) attending GSRP for free.
Currently, about 43,000 4-year-olds are enrolled in GSRP or the federally funded Head Start program. That’s about two out of three children who are eligible according to their family’s income. State officials hope 90 percent of eligible children will enroll by the time the expansion is fully ramped up, in three years.

LEELANAU COUNTY, MI -- A Michigan man accused of assaulting a news crew following an event attended by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault, destruction of property and disturbing the peace.
According to UpNorthLive, Michael Harrison, 39, appeared in court Tuesday to face the charges and enter his not guilty plea. The charges stem from a May 6 incident in which Harrison allegedly grabbed a microphone out of the hand of a reporter and threw it across a parking lot. As police placed Harrison in handcuffs he can been seen on video spitting on the camera the news crew was using.

Traverse City Area Public Schools cannot use Open Meetings Act to shield documents, court rules

A Michigan Court of Appeals has ruled on the side of
The Traverse City Record-Eagle in a case about transparency. The ruling says that Traverse City Area Public Schools cannot use the Open Meetings Act to withhold documents.
In the autumn of 2019, the
Record-Eagle filed a Freedom of Information Act Request to get a document which had complaints on then-TCAPS Superintendent Ann Cardon. The school board declined the request and a subsequent appeal, saying the document was a part of the minutes of a closed session. The lawsuit to get the documents was filed in January 2020.
The Michigan Open Meetings Act says that separate minutes are to be taken for a closed session, and that "these minutes... are not available to the public, and shall only be disclosed if required by a civil action filed under section 10, 11, or 13. "

Traverse City area parents condemn racist social media group chat, call for regional wake-up call

Concerned residents and parents spoke out against racism and harassment Up North during a Traverse City school board meeting Monday night.
The agenda was dominated by allegations of racist behavior among high school students in Traverse City Area Public Schools. On April 23 the district announced that some were sharing slavery-themed pictures of students of color with price tags on the social media app Snapchat. This follows a trend that’s popped up in other schools across the country.
The messages sent by Traverse City students also included threats against Black students and urged for another Holocaust. A student eventually reported the chat to school officials.
