The Caribbean island of St Vincent has been rocked by explosive eruptions at La Soufrière volcano, which spewed clouds of ash miles into the air a day and forced thousands to flee for safety.
The country’s National Emergency Management Organisation (Nemo) confirmed on Twitter that the 4,049-foot volcano had erupted on Friday morning and warned residents to leave the surrounding areas.
Pictures shared on social media showed towering plumes of gas and volcanic matter billowing into the sky above the volcano, and heavy ash fall was reported in the surrounding areas. ....

Thousands of people were ordered to evacuate from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent as the La Soufriere volcano erupted on Friday (April 9) morning.
Please leave the red zone immediately. La Soufriere has erupted,  St. Vincent s National Emergency Management Organization said. Ash fall recorded as far as Argyle International Airport.
The agency reported that ash plumes were about five miles high and being blown east.
Videos of La Soufriere erupting were shared on social media.
The la Soufriere Volcano in St. Vincent and the Grenadines is experiencing an explosive eruption at this moment,  Kenville Horne captioned a video he shared on Twitter. ....

Kingstown – Residents shared their experiences of the 1979 eruption of the La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent earlier this week, prior to the evacuation order given by Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves yesterday and the explosive eruption this morning.
The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre said the eruption began at 8:41 a.m.
“This is a culmination of the seismic activity that began on April 8. The eruption is ongoing,” a statement said.
A resident of Big River, a commumity in Owia, says the earthquakes that are occuring at the Soufriere volcano, were to his knowledge, not a feature of the 1979 eruption. ....
