Fact check on Netflix's Seaspiracy film about fishing damaging oceans

A documentary about the fishing industry s impact on sea life and the oceans has caused a lot of debate.
Many viewers have been saying they will no longer eat fish after watching the film, and expressed shock at the industrial scale of fishing.
Others have argued it oversimplifies a complex issue - many communities depend on fishing for their livelihoods and for food, and are in fact practising sustainable catching methods.
BBC s Reality Check team looked into some of the main claims in the
Seaspiracy film on Netflix.
Claim: Oceans will be virtually empty by 2048
If current fishing trends continue, we will see virtually empty oceans by the year 2048, says Ali Tabrizi, the film s director and narrator. ....

A long-running dispute over plans to start mining the ocean floor has suddenly flared up.
For years it was only environmental groups that objected to the idea of digging up metals from the deep sea.
But now BMW, Volvo, Google and Samsung are lending their weight to calls for a moratorium on the proposals.
The move has been criticised by companies behind the deep sea mining plans, who say the practice is more sustainable in the ocean than on land. ....

Federal scientific expedition surveys impacts of massive Bute Inlet slide

Federal scientists and the Canadian Coast Guard have joined the flurry of scientific activity around the site of a massive landslide late last year in the Bute Inlet watershed on B.C.’s isolated central coast.
Natural Resources Canada researcher Gwyn Lintern recently spent six days aboard the Coast Guard vessel Sir Wilfrid Laurier as part of the first federal marine investigation of the inlet following the slide on Nov. 28.
A mountain slope, likely destabilized by glacial retreat due to climate change, plunged into a lake northeast of the inlet.
The outburst created a torrent of millions of tonnes of earth, water and trees that carved up creek beds and river bottoms before spilling into the ocean at the head of the fjord. ....
