Athens graduate awarded ROTC award

Davis Young, a 2020 graduate of Athens High School, was recently awarded The Silver ROTC SAR award. With it was a flag that flew over the Texas capitol.
While at AHS, he won a four year AROTC scholarship and is studying to be in the medical field. He is the son of Kevin and Amy Young of Star Harbor.
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution awards the ROTC Medal to foster the principle of the âcitizen-soldier,â exemplified by the Minutemen of Revolutionary War days. This award is presented by an SAR Chapter, State-level Society, or the National Society to ROTC or JROTC cadets who are selected for having a high degree of merit with respect to leadership qualities, military bearing, and general excellence. ....

Sedona Fire District’s Capt. Casey Carr admits that an award he received over the weekend brought some mixed feelings.
“It was humbling, I would say,” he said. “For any firefighter I know, awards for something like this often times we kind of overlook them because it is what we do. It’s the reason we got into this profession. You do it because you want to serve and it’s not for the recognition.” ....

Military Heritage Museum to host genealogy workshop in Punta Gorda

PUNTA GORDA â The Military Heritage Museum in Punta Gorda has announced an event to commemorate National Genealogy Day on Saturday.
The free presentation and workshop begins at 11 a.m., and will teach participants how to trace their heritage.
Volunteers from the Hickory Bluff Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, Charlotte Chapter Florida Society Sons of the American Revolution, as well as the Military Heritage Museum will be available afterward to help participants get started.
âRecognizing National Genealogy Day at the museum seemed to be a perfect fit for what we do,â said museum Executive Director Gary Butler. âWhen you think about it, so many of our artifacts in the museum relate to someone in the past who served in the military.â ....
