A bid by Canadian convenience store operator Alimentation Couche-Tard to take over French retailer Carrefour is raising eyebrows in the French government. As Reuters reports, France’s finance minister said on Thursday that any takeover of the French retailer by a foreign company would be a “major difficulty,” citing the need to protect food security and sovereignty. French officials have also said that the near-$20-million takeover bid also raises job-security concerns.
“Having Carrefour being bought by a foreign company would be a major difficulty for all of us,” said Bruno Le Maire in an interview at the Reuters Next conference. “Food security is at the core of the strategic challenges of all developed nations.” ....
