Hillsboro Scouts To Honor The Legacy Of Sam Houston
The annual Hillsboro Friends of Scouting Dinner will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 8, at the Scout Hut in Hillsboro, located at 915 Corsicana Highway. This year, the scouts will remember local resident Sam Houston s 80-year contribution to scouting.
A celebration of Houston’s 80th anniversary in scouting was originally planned for this year s event, but he passed away suddenly Wednesday, March 24. His life and legacy will now be honored at the event. If we can t honor him, we can enjoy and honor the example he left for the youth of Hillsboro, Hill County and Texas, organizers announced. ....

Gertie Lowe's death is 'tremendous loss' but her legacy will continue


Dr. Gertie Lowe of Gadsden was named a Pillar of Education by the Gadsden City school system in 2014-2015, and manycredit her with laying a foundation for the people of her community through her mentoring, her work in her church and in civil rights.
Lowe died Friday, and her passing marks a tremendous loss to the community, Gadsden City Schools Superintendent Tony Reddick said.
Lowe was encouraged by her mother who had a fifth-grade education – to value and strive for education. She did, becoming a nurse, and was honored as a top nursing home administrator.
Lowe valued learning, not only for herself but for others. Some two decades ago, she mentored a child during the school year and continued through the summer months. She recognized the value of study in the summer and extended it to other children. ....
