China has lashed out after New Zealand s Parliament declared severe human rights abuses are occurring there against the Uighur minority, saying it will harm the mutual trust between the countries.
Parliament yesterday unanimously supported a motion to declare it was gravely concerned about the severe human rights abuses taking place against Uighurs and other ethnic and religious minorities in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region .
MPs called on the Government to work with the United Nations, international partners, and to work with all relevant instruments of international law to bring these abuses to an end . ....

Politicians have agreed to an ACT Party-backed motion on China s treatment of the Uighur minority in the north-western Chinese province of Xinjiang.
A large number of reports have emerged in recent years suggesting the indigenous population is subject to torture, brainwashing and sterilisation. Despite China denying the abuses, some countries have declared acts of genocide are occuring.
New Zealand isn t going that far. Instead, MPs on Wednesday debated a motion filed by ACT saying MPs are gravely concerned about the severe human rights abuses and calling on the Government to work with its international partners to bring the abuses to an end.  ....

Parliament has unanimously called for action to prevent severe human rights abuses against Uyghur Muslims, in a motion that stopped short of calling those abuses genocide.
Speaking in the house after tabling the motion, the wording of which was changed just an hour beforehand, Van Velden said she had to dilute and soften the motion to gain the acceptance of the governing party.
Our conscience requires that we support this motion, we know that a genocide is taking place . genocide does not require a war, it does not need to be sudden, it can be slow and deliberate and that is what is happening here. ....

Parliament has condemned severe human rights abuses against Uighur in China - but not genocide , as had been originally proposed.
The original wording of the motion requested Parliament debate whether human rights abuses against the Muslim minority group Uighur in the Chinese region of Xinjiang amounted to genocide, and in turn called on the Government to fulfil its obligations under international law. ....
