'Duterte cannot wash hands over killing of ABS-CBN franchise'

MANILA A year since lawmakers killed the franchise of the biggest television network in the country, a group of Filipino journalists said the Duterte administration cannot wash its hands over what is deemed as an assault on free press and abuse of power.
“Undoubtedly, the killing of the franchise is an order from Malacañang, and blindly undertaken by his cohorts without credible justification and reason,” the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines said in a statement.
On July 10, NUJP led a protest caravan from the House of Representatives to ABS-CBN to mark the first year since its shutdown that came in the heels of a pandemic, increased attacks against the press, and looming attempts of the Duterte administration to perpetuate itself beyond the 2022 elections. ....

The Philippines lost one of its foremost press freedom fighters Wednesday night. Jose Jaime Espina, popularly known as “Nonoy,” died from liver cancer just days after recovering from Covid-19, his family said. He was 59.
A longtime journalist based mainly in the central Philippines region of Negros, Espina was chairman of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) from 2018 to 2021. During this period President Rodrigo Duterte has carried out a withering attack against the media, leading to the December 2020 shutdown of ABS-CBN, the country’s largest broadcast network, and the persecution of Maria Ressa and her investigative news outfit Rappler. As Filipino journalists all over the country mourn the passing of fellow newsman Nonoy Espina, his family informed the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) on Thursday, July 8, that they wish to channel all
abuloy or donations for his funeral to a health and welfare fund for journalists and media workers.
Nonoy, former NUJP chairperson, died of liver cancer on Wednesday, July 7, in his hometown, Bacolod City.
We know so many colleagues live under precarious economic conditions, with no tenure and often, with little social benefits, Nonoy s sister, veteran journalist Inday Espina-Varona, said in a Facebook post. ....
