The Ohioana Book Festival will be virtual again this year, and will feature 137 authors

How things have changed over 15 years for the Ohioana Book Festival.
In 2007, when the festival began, it was patterned after the National Book Festival begun by first lady Laura Bush in 2001. The first Ohioana Book Festival featured 20 writers, all of whom had contributed the essays in the book “Good Roots: Writers Reflect on Growing Up in Ohio.” About 100 people attended the festival, which took place at the State Library of Ohio.
Last year, as the festival was about to take place at the Columbus Metropolitan Library, COVID-19 struck. The festival was delayed until August, when, with the pandemic still in full force, it was held online for the first time. There were 5,500 “live” attendees and an estimated 45,000 additional people participating through various social media, podcast and broadcast venues. ....

Mark Camilleri announces election for book council top job

Chief executive of the National Book Council Mark Camilleri has announced an election will be held for the top post of the cultural body in a bid to halt a system where the leadership of cultural entities is appointed solely by the government.
In a statement published by the National Book Council, Camilleri said that he would be contesting the said election, which authors and publishers are invited to vote on, and hoped to serve a further three years in his post, which he has occupied since 2013.
With a mandate from the National Congress of Writers, Camilleri said he hoped to continue restoration works on a Valletta palazzo to be transformed into a centre for literacy and a bookshop, as well as to continue advocating for the use of the Mediterranean Conference Centre as the venue for the National Book Festival.  ....

U.S. Poet Joy Harjo: ‘There’s a Poem Out There That Can Change Your Life’
After a year of pandemic and racial tension, U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo finds comfort and lessons in poetry.
“Those moments that are the most terrifying, empowering, grief-filled, joy-filled, they are always accompanied by poetry,” Harjo said in an interview with the Library of Congress, where she is serving her third term as poet laureate. “There’s always a poem out there that can change your life.” ....

Jill Biden redefines role of first lady

Biden stands on the shoulders of her predecessors as she redefines the role of first lady in American culture. Too often, first ladies have been relegated to the secondary stories of history, often perceived as serving a supportive yet subordinate role in the White House and their husbands’ presidential administrations. However, there were several 20th-century examples of first ladies who challenged accepted societal norms and modernized the position.
Eleanor Roosevelt wrote a daily newspaper column as first lady, donating her pay to charity. Her journalism only scratched the surface of the barriers she broke. Perhaps the most remarkable precedent was her ability to establish a voice independent from her husband’s on a controversial, contemporary topic. Mrs. Roosevelt’s thoughts on race changed dramatically over her lifetime. By the time she served as first lady, she had become an outspoken advocate for federal anti-lynching legislation.
