Covid trial in UK examines mixing different vaccines

A UK trial has been launched to see if giving people different Covid vaccines for their first and second doses works as well as the current approach of using the same type of vaccine twice.
The idea is to provide more flexibility with vaccine rollout and help deal with any potential disruption to supplies.
Scientists say mixing jabs could also possibly give even better protection.
The vaccines minister said no changes would be made to the UK s current approach until at least the summer.
Currently, official guidance from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) says anyone already given the Pfizer-BioNTech or Oxford-AstraZeneca jab as part of the UK s approved immunisation programme should get the same vaccine for both doses. ....

The UK is getting safer every day as almost one in five adults have now had their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, Nadhim Zahawi has said.
The NHS is on track to meet its target of vaccinating the top four priority groups by mid-February through a close focus on the most vulnerable , the vaccines minister told MPs.

The world’s first COVID-19 vaccine study researching alternating doses and intervals of approved vaccines, begins today in Nottingham.
The world’s first COVID-19 vaccine study researching alternating doses and intervals of approved vaccines, begins today in Nottingham.
The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)-supported study, which will be run at the University of Nottingham Health Service, will determine the effects of using a different vaccine for the second dose to the first dose, in addition to two different intervals between doses.
The study, classified as an Urgent Public Health study by the NIHR, is being undertaken by the National Immunisation Schedule Evaluation Consortium (NISEC) and the Oxford Vaccine Group, and is backed by £7 million of government funding from the Vaccines Taskforce. ....
